Best CMMC compliance software for small contractors

Published 2026-10-22

No software makes a shop compliant. What the rule asks for is paperwork you can defend: a system security plan CA.L2-3.12.4, a plan of action for what is not done yet CA.L2-3.12.2, and a score across the 110 security requirements of NIST SP 800-171 Rev 2, counted the way 32 CFR 170.24 counts it. Compliance software keeps those three in one place and tells you what to fix next.

We read six vendors' own pages against those requirements, and against one question most buyers skip: once the tool holds your security data, it sits inside your assessment boundary too. If you are still working out where that boundary runs, start with the CMMC scoping worksheet.

Status as of 2026-10-23

Six tools against the rule

Rows inside the boundary are what the rule asks of your paperwork and of any cloud that holds CUI. Rows outside it are conveniences. Every word in the table was read on the vendor's own page on 2026-10-22.

What the software can and cannot do

A tool tracks; you assess. Under a Level 2 self-assessment your company scores itself, enters the result in SPRS, and a senior person, the Affirming Official, affirms it after every assessment and every year after a final status. We found no vendor page that says the tool submits for you, and Vanta's says the opposite: you still submit scores and attestations in SPRS. How Vanta, Drata and Secureframe each handle the score is in Vanta vs Drata for CMMC.

The score itself is simple arithmetic, which is why every tool can show one. You start at 110 and each requirement not met takes off 1, 3 or 5 points, so a score can go negative. Only two requirements earn partial credit: multi-factor authentication costs 3 points if it covers only remote and privileged users, and encryption costs 3 points if it is not FIPS-validated. Our SPRS score calculator does the same sum for free, so you can check a vendor's number before you trust it. Why the same score is judged more strictly under CMMC than under DFARS 7019 is in CMMC vs NIST SP 800-171.

The documents are where tools differ. An SSP has no prescribed format, and an assessor reads it to learn how each requirement is met in your shop, not in a template. Read what goes in a system security plan before you judge a generated one, and keep the SSP template as a yardstick.

Check the tool's POA&M view against the rule

A plan of action is where a tool can mislead you most, because the rule allows far less on a POA&M than a spreadsheet does. Before you buy, ask the vendor to show these four rules working. The background is in what a POA&M is, and the POA&M template follows the same rules.

Rule text, 32 CFR 170.21
What the rule saysWhat to look for in the tool
Your score must be at least 88 of 110 (the rule's ratio: score divided by 110 is 0.8 or more).§ 170.21(a)(2)(i)The tool warns before a change drops you under 88, not after.
Only 1-point requirements may go on the POA&M, plus SC.L2-3.13.11 when you encrypt but not with FIPS-validated modules.§ 170.21(a)(2)(ii)Each requirement shows its 1, 3 or 5 point value, and 3- and 5-point gaps cannot be parked.
Never on a POA&M: AC.L2-3.1.20, AC.L2-3.1.22, CA.L2-3.12.4, PE.L2-3.10.3, PE.L2-3.10.4, PE.L2-3.10.5.§ 170.21(a)(2)(iii)Those six are flagged by number, whatever their point value.
Close the POA&M within 180 days of the Conditional CMMC Status Date, or the status expires.§ 170.21(b)A countdown from your status date, not from the day you opened the item.

Is the tool inside your boundary?

A compliance platform fills up with exactly the data the rule calls Security Protection Data: how your firewall is configured, which laptops are unpatched, scan results, sometimes the admin passwords. Under 32 CFR 170.19 a cloud provider holding that data is an External Service Provider, and what it holds decides how it is scoped. The same test applies to the tool that keeps those admin passwords; see password managers for CMMC.

Rule text, 32 CFR 170.19
If the tool holdsThen
CUI, with or without security dataThe provider must meet the FedRAMP requirements of DFARS 252.204-7012: FedRAMP Moderate, or equivalent to it.
Security data only: configurations, logs, scan results, passwords for in-scope systemsThe tool is in your assessment scope as a Security Protection Asset, and goes in your SSP.
NeitherNot an External Service Provider under CMMC; it stays out of scope.

That is why the FedRAMP row sits inside the boundary in our table, and why it only matters if CUI goes in. On 2026-10-22 the FedRAMP Marketplace listed Secureframe and Paramify as FedRAMP Certified at Moderate, Vanta's separate Government Cloud edition at Moderate, and FutureFeed inside a certified High hosting package; Centraleyes and Scytale were not listed. The first three were certified through the newer FedRAMP 20x pilot, and no DoD source we read says a 20x class counts as FedRAMP Moderate under DFARS 7012, so ask your prime or contracting officer in writing before you put CUI in one. For a provider that is not authorized, the DoD CIO memo of 2023-12-21 sets the bar for equivalency: 100 percent of the FedRAMP Moderate baseline, assessed by a FedRAMP-recognized 3PAO, with the body of evidence handed to you. The full test is in FedRAMP Moderate equivalency explained.

800-171 workbook

FutureFeed

What it is. A tool built only for NIST SP 800-171 and CMMC: a gap assessment that produces the SSP, a live SPRS score, inventory tagged to controls, and embedded micro-training (videos and written guides) that walks you through one control at a time.

Who it fits. A small shop where the office manager or one IT person will do the work, with a partner firm on call rather than a full-time consultant.

GRC platform

Secureframe

What it is. A compliance automation platform with a CMMC module: it maps controls to CMMC requirements and assessment objectives, calculates a live SPRS score, and generates the SSP and POA&M, with SSP export in OSCAL.

Who it fits. A shop already running Microsoft GCC High, Azure Government or Google Workspace that wants evidence pulled from those systems instead of screenshots.

GRC platform

Vanta

What it is. A multi-framework compliance platform whose CMMC product pre-maps controls to NIST SP 800-171 and 800-172, monitors an SPRS score, and manages SSPs and POA&Ms. Vanta says its tests and templates align to Rev 2. Its separate Vanta Government Cloud is FedRAMP Certified at Moderate; the main platform's listing is at Low.

Who it fits. A shop that also answers SOC 2 or ISO 27001 questionnaires from commercial customers and wants one platform for all of them.

Paramify

What it is. A security documentation platform from the FedRAMP world that applies the same approach to 800-171: continuous gap assessment, SPRS score tracking, and generated SSPs, policies, procedures, POA&Ms and customer responsibility matrices.

Who it fits. A shop whose SSP is the bottleneck, or one that also sells a cloud product and needs FedRAMP paperwork from the same tool.

Risk and compliance platform

Centraleyes

What it is. A risk and compliance platform with a CMMC module that runs from scoping and a NIST 800-171 gap analysis to SSPs, SPRS score reports and POA&Ms produced from live control data. Its Centraleyes+ option is sold as a managed service.

Who it fits. A shop that wants the platform and the people in one contract, and would rather be told what to do next than run the program itself.

GRC platform

Scytale

What it is. A compliance automation platform that pairs round-the-clock control monitoring for NIST SP 800-171 and 800-172 with a dedicated GRC expert who guides your CUI and FCI scoping; its agents draft the SSP and keep it current.

Who it fits. A first-time contractor that wants a named person to scope the boundary, more than it wants a score dashboard.

How we read the vendors

Questions small shops ask

Questions
Do I need compliance software to pass a CMMC assessment?

No. The rule asks for the documents and the score, not for a product, and NIST says there is no prescribed format for a system security plan. A careful shop can do it in documents and a spreadsheet. Software earns its cost when several people share the work, when evidence goes stale between assessments, or when you would otherwise pay a consultant to keep the paperwork current. If you would rather hire the people, the firms are compared in CMMC consultants and RPOs. If the platform you have came in for ISO 27001, what that certificate covers is in CMMC vs ISO 27001.

Can the software submit my SPRS score for me?

Not on any vendor page we read. Your company enters its self-assessment result in SPRS, and your Affirming Official, a senior person in the company, affirms it after each assessment and every year after a final status. The tool prepares the numbers; the affirmation is yours.

Which NIST SP 800-171 revision should the tool follow?

Rev 2. NIST published Rev 3 in May 2024, but 32 CFR Part 170 incorporates Rev 2 and the DFARS 252.204-7012 text contracting officers use today names Revision 2. A tool that has moved to Rev 3 only, with no Rev 2 view, scores you against the wrong list. The 110 Rev 2 requirements by family are on one page.

Does CMMC still matter while Phase 2 is suspended?

Yes. The suspension stops contracts from adding the third-party Level 2 and Level 3 requirements; contracts may still require a Level 1 or Level 2 self-assessment, and DFARS 252.204-7012 with NIST SP 800-171 Rev 2 still applies. The tool you buy now is the one you would use for a self-assessment. What still applies today.

Does the software have to be FedRAMP authorized?

Only if you put CUI in it. A tool that holds only your security data (configurations, scan results, logs) is in your assessment scope as a Security Protection Asset, which is a different test. If CUI goes in, the provider must meet FedRAMP Moderate or its equivalent under DFARS 252.204-7012.
